A beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, father and grandfather, he joined his heavenly Father at 3 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2006, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. He was 57, a native of Little Rock, Ark., and a longtime former resident of Baton Rouge, having recently moved to Denham Springs. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a BellSouth facility technician with 30 years of service and was looking forward to retiring in August.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kathy Patin Oberste; son, Aaron Oberste and wife Aryn Breeden Oberste; daughter, Amber Oberste Shadow and husband Alan Shadow; son, Andrew Oberste; his granddaughter, Brooke Lynn Oberste, who was the greatest joy of his life; parents, George and Alleen Oberste; two brothers, David Oberste and wife Barbara, and Paul Oberste and wife Jane; four sisters, Susan Oberste Ross, Linda Oberste Withrow and husband With Withrow, Carol Oberste and Lisa Oberste Finne and husband Tim Finne; brother-in-law, Cecil Patin and wife Beth Retzer Patin; sisters-in-law, Sandy Patin Gilbert and husband Ronnie Gilbert, and Miriam Patin Sanchez and husband Ronnie Sanchez; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve loved life and some of his greatest pleasures were relaxing in his backyard in the quiet and peaceful oasis he had created, gardening, fishing, sports, music and his guitar. Steve never met a stranger and will be missed by all who knew him.
